BigRock Mountain, Maine’s northernmost lift-accessible skiing destination, is on the verge of a significant upgrade with the installation of a new Doppelmayr Quad chairlift. The mountain, known for its family-friendly atmosphere and nonprofit status, is preparing to welcome skiers with a fresh lift experience by the Winter ’24/’25 season.
Located near the Canadian border, BigRock Mountain shared an exciting glimpse of the future with a recent Instagram post, showcasing the view from the loading area of the soon-to-be-completed chairlift. The lift, aptly named “Uncle Bud’s,” will service a vertical rise of 932 feet, stretching 3,450 feet in length and supported by 13 newly installed lift towers.
Though much work remains, the completion of Uncle Bud’s lift is within sight. The bullwheels are expected to arrive next week, followed by the top and bottom terminals later this month. Once the cable is spliced and the wiring is completed, the lift will be ready to welcome skiers.
The $2.9 million project was made possible by a Capital Campaign launched in 2021, reflecting the community’s dedication to enhancing the ski area’s offerings. Uncle Bud’s lift will replace the aging Lift #3 double chair, which has been in operation since 1993 but is far older, having been purchased after 25 years of prior use. Lift #3 was manufactured by Mueller, a company that has since ceased operations.
Despite its modest elevation of 1,748 feet, BigRock Mountain boasts the highest peak in northeast Maine. For many in the region, this mountain is more than just a ski destination; it’s a cherished part of their winter traditions. The addition of a modern lift is set to make their ski experience even more enjoyable.
BigRock Mountain has a rich history as a ski haven for Northern Mainers throughout the 20th century. The area faced potential closure in 2013, but a group of dedicated individuals formed a nonprofit organization that saved the mountain. Since then, the mountain has continued to thrive, offering skiers a beloved winter retreat. This season, with the new lift in place, they can look forward to getting up the hill faster and making the most of the winter months.
