In a dazzling display of prowess, Jakob Jewett clinched victory at the 2024 Canadian Open Downhill held on the iconic 1199 track at Whistler, a year after his inaugural win on the same course. Named to commemorate Stevie Smith’s World Cup overall points total of 1199, the track witnessed Jewett’s continued dominance in the sport.
Jewett’s Reign Continues
Facing a formidable international field due to an extended World Cup break, Jewett once again proved his mettle. The podium was shared with two of the United States’ top riders: Dakotah Norton and Luca Shaw, who finished in second and third places, respectively. The extended podium included New Zealand’s Tuhoto-Ariki Pene and the renowned Danny Hart.
Canadian competitors also made their mark, with a strong showing from Trek Factory Racing’s Bodhi Kuhn leading a group of athletes who placed from 9th to 15th. Following Kuhn were Jon Mozell, Kirk McDowell, Dane Jewett, Tegan Cruz, Mark Wallace, and Kasper Woolley.
Women’s Division Highlights
On the women’s front, Jenna Hastings emerged victorious, securing a double win for Pivot Factory Racing on the 1199 track. Vancouver Island’s Emmy Lan, competing for Forbidden Synthesis, earned a notable second place. Matilda Melton narrowly outpaced 2023 junior world champion Erice van Leuven to claim third.
Miranda Miller also made a strong showing, finishing in seventh place, marking a successful race for the Canadian contingent.
