One of Victoria’s most prestigious surfing trophies will once again be up for grabs as the Torquay Boardriders prepare to host their annual Hells Djarrak multi-club invitational next month. On August 31, more than 40 of the state’s top surfers will converge at Bells Beach/Djarrak with their sights set on securing “The Bunjil.”

Carved by Surf Coast artist Raph Buttonshaw, the trophy symbolizes the creator spirit and eagle, Bunjil, who is the protector of Bells Beach/Djarrak.

Hells Djarrak will feature one male and one female surfer from each of the state’s boardriders clubs, including Jan Juc, South Coast, 13th Beach, Phillip Island, and Peninsula Surfriders. Torquay Boardriders will also have some of their own surfers in the mix. Invitations were sent out to top talent last week, with wildcards to be decided by a sub-committee soon.

Torquay Boardriders Club president Tully Wylie emphasized the significance of the event. “We cannot wait for Hells Djarrak this year, especially with the chance of running in perfect Bells bowl conditions,” Wylie said. “It’s certainly our biggest event on our calendar and a great opportunity for our club to compete against the best from across the state. Any event at Bells is special, and with such a prestigious trophy up for grabs, all competitors will be putting everything on the line to win.”

The winners of the Open Men and Open Women divisions will each receive $1,000. Additionally, the club with the best combined boardriders team result will be awarded $500.

A social shoutout division will complement the professional competition, with special guests from sponsors Roxy and Quiksilver slated to appear. The full invite list will be available on the Torquay Boardriders’ social media channels in the coming days.

Mark your calendars for August 31 as the state’s elite surfers gather for an unmissable showdown at Hells Djarrak.
