The North Shore community and surfers worldwide gathered in a poignant tribute this past weekend to honor the memory of Tamayo Perry, a revered figure known for his prowess at Pipeline and his dedication as a lifeguard.

Tamayo Perry, a professional surfer and lifeguard, tragically passed away on June 23, 2024, leaving a profound impact on those who knew him. On Sunday, July 14, over a thousand people congregated at Sunset Beach Elementary School, overlooking the famed Banzai Pipeline, to celebrate his life amidst heartfelt embraces, tears, and shared memories.

“It was the largest gathering I’ve witnessed in the surfing community, and deeply moving,” remarked Mike Latronic, a longtime resident and publisher of Freesurf Magazine. Nearly a hundred of Tamayo’s colleagues from the City and County of Honolulu paid their respects, underscoring his role as a respected first responder.

Known for his boundless aloha spirit, Tamayo Perry touched the lives of countless individuals, whether through his vigilant lifeguarding or his infectious presence at church, where his faith and warmth were palpable.

“He was as beloved as any lifeguard in Hawaii,” recalled Derrick Doerner, a friend and former colleague. Stories abound of Tamayo’s kindness, like offering rides to surfers or sharing his adventurous tales of near misses in the surf.

The ceremony at Sunset Elementary was followed by a traditional paddle-out at Pipeline, Tamayo’s favorite surf spot. Hundreds took to the water, joined by a helicopter dropping flowers and Hawaiian chants echoing through the lineup. The iconic Hawaiian vessel Hokule’a made a special appearance, symbolizing Tamayo’s profound impact on Hawaiian culture and surfing.

Tamayo’s wife, Emilia, reflected on the outpouring of support: “The aloha we’ve received has been incredibly comforting.” His legacy, marked by courage and camaraderie, continues to resonate across the North Shore and beyond.

In the words of Tamayo himself, “It’s a lotto game out here… And eventually, the odds are against you.” Even in his passing, Tamayo Perry leaves behind a legacy that enriches the community he cherished, a testament to a life lived with passion and purpose.
