What started as a dry practice session quickly transformed into a grueling test of skill and endurance as rain swept in for race day, turning the track into perhaps the most demanding in World Cup history.
The race weekend commenced with the XCC event on Friday, where Puck Pieterse of Alpecin-Deceuninck seized second place in the Women’s category, closely followed by Rebecca Henderson from Primaflor Mondraker in third. In the Men’s competition, with Nino Schurter opting out to prepare for the Olympics, Sam Gaze of Alpecin-Deceuninck charged into third place.
Saturday’s downhill races were marred by the onset of rain, canceling the Junior’s race and drastically altering track conditions for Elite athletes. Despite the challenges, Mille Johnset of Canyon CLLCTV excelled, securing second place in the Elite Women’s race. The Men’s event witnessed the return of downhill legend Greg Minnaar from Norco Race Division to the podium, claiming the bronze after a formidable run down the treacherous course. Local favorite Rémi Thirion of Giant Factory Off-Road Team also delighted fans with a fourth-place finish.
Sunday’s XCO competition continued to be affected by the weather, necessitating tire changes and presenting a slippery course. Puck Pieterse capitalized on her strategic starting position and tire choice to clinch the gold in the Elite Women’s race, while Anne Terpstra of Ghost Factory Racing secured fifth place. Luca Martin of Orbea Factory Team impressed in the U23 Men’s category, finishing second and adding to the weekend’s exciting performances.
