Three orthoptists from the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are gearing up to leap 15,000ft from a plane this August at the Black Knights Skydiving Centre in Lancaster. Claire Voas-Clarke, Abbey Morris, and Vicki Jackson are embarking on this daring challenge to raise funds for a state-of-the-art eye scanning machine for their department.

The initiative, part of The Countess Charity’s Retinal Eye Scanner Appeal, aims to procure an Optos scanner. This advanced equipment promises wider retina images, facilitating quicker diagnoses with reduced invasiveness. Particularly beneficial for young children and babies, the scanner promises to enhance care across age groups.

Claire Voas-Clarke shared, “Securing sponsorship for this appeal means the world to us. While I’ve participated in sponsorship events before, this one holds special significance.”

Vicki Jackson added, “We wanted a challenge that would resonate and push us beyond our comfort zones. None of us have skydived before, so it’s a real test. Interestingly, one of our former patients, a Skydiving Champion, has shared invaluable advice, ensuring our safety and preparation.”

Despite the lack of preparatory time, the trio remains determined. “We’ll arrive on the day, give our all, and keep our mission in mind,” Vicki affirmed.

Their efforts are aimed at securing the scanner, ensuring top-notch eye care for local adults and children.
